On the afternoon of May 3rd, a grand ceremony was held at Southeast University (SEU) to confer honorary professor to Prof. Zdenek P. Bazant, member of American Academy of Science, American Academy of Engineering, as well as American Academy of Science and Art.
The ceremony was hosted by Prof. Wu Zhishen, SEU’s Assistant President and Director of International Institute for Urban Systems Engineering. SEU President Yi Hong gave a speech, extending warm welcome to Prof. Bazant’s visit and hearty congratulations on his conferment. He expressed the firm belief that with Prof. Bazant’s caring and support, International Institute for Urban Systems Engineering and the discipline of civil engineering would achieve better and faster development in the future. After being awarded the letter of appointment and the university badge, Prof. Bazant delivered a speech, thanking SEU for giving him such great honor. He pointed out that SEU and Northwestern University not only share a connection in their names, but also keep sound exchange and cooperation for over two decades, which has greatly enhanced two universities’ predominance over relevant areas.
After the ceremony, Prof. Bazant delivered a lecture named “Pervasiveness of Concrete Creep Problems in Structures: Wake-Up Call for Design Codes and Consequences of Nano-Porosity” to more than 150 teachers and students. Afterwards, teachers and students had heated discussions with Prof. Bazant over problems concerning shrinkage, creep and crevice of concrete construction, etc.
